Long ago, one cold Friday evening, in a dimly lite room, four great men gathered together and changed the world as we knew it forever. This gathering took place in the Science Hall, now known as Thirkield Hall, on the campus of Howard University. The Date was November 17, 1911. On this evening, these four great minds came togather to give birth to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The names of these of these four honorable men are Ernest E. Just, Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper and Frank Coleman
The name Omega Psi Phi was derived from the initials of the Greek phrase meaning "Friendship is Essential to the Soul", as so the phrase was selected as the motto. As cardinal principles Manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift were adopted. A decision was made regarding the design for the pin and emblem, and thus ended the first meeting of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
